A Castle Full of History — and Stories
The cultural anchor in the green Lausitz region.
In 2021, the LIVING BAUHAUS Art Foundation (SbR) relocated its headquarters from Berlin to Schloss Bärenklau in Schenkendöbern. Beginning in January 2024, the Berlin-Mitte property will once again be used more extensively, while Schloss Bärenklau remains available until the completion of its structural renovation. The ensemble was designed between 1928 and 1930 by the Jewish architects Breslauer & Salinger for the Guben textile manufacturer Ernst C. Lehmann-Bärenklau. After the war, it was used as a FDGB convalescent home before gradually falling into disrepair. In 2000, it was acquired by a Cologne-based manufacturer, and in 2020 by Schloss Bärenklau GbR. Despite its eventful history, the estate remained well preserved. By the end of 2025, Schloss Bärenklau GbR successfully completed the renovation and restoration.

Genius Loci — The Magic of Place
Schloss Bärenklau is a site imbued with genius loci — where past, present, and future intertwine. Its historic atmosphere provides space for creative endeavors and new ideas. In the former salons, once home to a museum-quality art collection, the LIVING BAUHAUS Art Foundation (SbR) now presents an ambitious collection of contemporary works. Alongside fellowships for young artists, the foundation hosts concerts, exhibitions, and exchange formats. In 2023, an exhibition focused on the castle’s eventful history and its collections — in dialogue with the present.
